The Swiss manufacturer has proven time and again that it isn’t all about hype, hyper or hyperbole
Roger Dubuis is no stranger to hyper, or hype. The brand is seeking to push the boundaries of the hyperwatch even further in the new Excalibur Spider Ultimate Carbon, with the brand’s typical blend of bold complications and audacious materials.
This case and strap of this timepiece are constructed entirely from multi-layer carbon, while its movement contains a flying tourbillon — brazenly skeletonised, of course, and in fact is claimed to be ‘the only skeleton single flying tourbillon with a skeleton case’ available today. And if that was not enough, the watch is festooned with diamonds. A hundred and ninety-five of them, to be exact, on the strap and bezel, and even the openwork dial — the tourbillon carriage is the first one in the world to be fitted with baguette-cut diamonds. The combination of dazzle and carbon black make for a pointed, monochromatic contrast of gritty engineering and unabashed luxury.
It is not a shy watch, of course, not at 45mm in diameter, though the near-complete use of carbon would make it light on the wrist. The hand-wound movement has a 50-hour power reserve, and the watch is limited to just eight pieces worldwide.
