The Excalibur Spider Unique Series is a typical expression of Roger Dubuis: a brash 47mm case of black carbon and black DLC titanium and neon green highlights with a rubber strap and an unabashed skeleton dial. Its hypermodern looks are, however, an implementation of two classical high complications. The automatic calibre RD107 features a minute repeater and a flying tourbillon. The dial also houses three questionably necessary but undoubtedly fun embellishments: a striking indicator which is a visual aid that helps recognise whether the hours, minutes or quarters are currently being chimed, a crown function indicator that denotes whether it is in a time-setting or winding position, and an ‘all or nothing’ indicator which shows whether the pusher has been moved far enough to trigger the chiming mechanism.
Despite the ambitious complications, and high-tech construction the Excalibur Spider Unique Series is a sporty piece, and easily wearable thanks to its use of lightweight carbon. Its allure is enhanced by its rarity, as only a single example will be released.
