Fans of Roald Dahl’s works must have been giddy with glee when news came about Dhal’s Matilda being given a stage adaptation back in 2009. Now after enjoying critical acclaim internationally, Matilda The Musical will debut in Kuala Lumpur on 2 June at Istana Budaya.
Matilda The Musical has received accolades worldwide with over 85 international award wins. The beloved musical has won hearts on West End and Broadway where it garnered positive reviews. This successful musical features original score by Olivier Award winner Tim Minchin, book by Tony Award-winning playwright Dennis Kelly, as well as staging by Tony Award winning director Matthew Warchus and Tony Award winning choreographer Peter Darling.
The story follows Matilda, a precocious 5-year-old girl who loves reading and learning, but is suppressed by her TV-obsessed parents who pay her little attention. As she grows up, she begins to resist the challenges and obstacles presented to her, learning that sometimes you have to be a “little bit naughty” in order to get through life.
Just when Matilda masters living with her family, her world is thrown into disarray when her new school is run by the tyrannous headteacher Miss Trunchbull. Seeking solace in the library in a world of her imagination and creation, Matilda forms strong bonds with adults such as librarian Mrs Phelps and her class teacher Miss Honey. Together they give her the confidence to embrace her special gift and individuality and helped her reclaim her life.
The musical premieres on 2 June 2020 and tickets start at RM200.
