The Hasanah Gold Threads Awards, established last year by Yayasan Hasanah, a foundation of Khazanah Nasional Berhad, returns for its second edition this year. Under the theme Threading Time, Weaving Our Arts, the award celebrates the rich tradition of textile craftsmanship from past to present, spotlighting the remarkable role of Malaysian artisans in not only safeguarding the nation’s cultural legacy, but also breathing new life into it through innovative techniques.
While the award remains focused on the sustainable conservation of cultural heritage, it also emphasises the importance of the creative economy as a viable source of growth. This dynamic approach sparks new connections and momentum, as demonstrated by The Hasanah Gold Threads Awards 2023 winners, whose recognition has led to cross-industry collaborations with designers, heritage agencies, and material producers, further enhancing their skills and expanding their capacity within the craft sector.
“The second edition of the HGTA reaffirms our dedication to preserving and promoting Malaysia’s cultural heritage, especially our diverse textile traditions,” said Siti Kamariah Ahmad Subki, trustee and managing director of Yayasan Hasanah. “Additionally, while the initial boost from prize philanthropy is valuable in garnering participation, what really makes a difference are the lasting connections made between artisans and key industry players. This celebration of our artisans strengthens our cultural fabric and supports the growth of our creative economy.”
This year, the ceremony was fittingly held at the historic Rumah Tangsi in Kuala Lumpur, a venue with an equally vibrant legacy. First commissioned as the prominent businessman Loke Chow Kit’s mansion between 1905 and 1907, the building later evolved into the Empire Hotel and then the Peninsular Hotel, followed by its time as the Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) Centre. After undergoing a meticulous restoration, the iconic building now stands as Rumah Tangsi, a cherished landmark that bridges the past with the present.
From among 158 submissions, a total cash prize of RM360,000 was awarded to 20 winners, with the grand Hasanah Gold Award presented to Adiguru Ngot binti Bi from Asajaya, Sarawak, an outstanding 92-year-old artisan who also previously triumphed at the Hasanah Gold Awards 2023, having honed her craft for more than 80 years and proudly representing Sarawak Malay culture.
The winners were selected across six categories: supplementary weft, ikat, drawing and stamping, embroidery and embellishment, and plaiting and beadwork. Each submission was evaluated based on four key criteria: excellence, authenticity, marketability and innovation.
These winners will join a prestigious group of past honourees and enjoy numerous benefits, including invitations to art residencies, fellowship programmes, and various exhibits. They will also have the opportunity to conduct demonstrations of their craft, host interactive workshops, and enhance their marketability and exposure, all of which are aimed at advancing their careers. Last year, six winners were granted the opportunity to participate in an Artist-in-Residence programme at the world-famous rainforest resort, The Datai Langkawi.
This initiative will continue to highlight the exceptional talents of master artisans as Yayasan Hasanah plans for the Hasanah Gold Threads Awards to become a permanent annual fixture. Guests interested in participating can look forward to the upcoming event next year, where you can immerse yourselves in the vibrant world of Malaysia’s textile traditions.
