The Macallan has recently unveiled the second expression in its festive gifting whisky series, titled ‘A Night on Earth – The Journey’. First launched in 2021, this series began with A Night on Earth in Scotland, which marks the transition of the season and year, as well as the wonderful night celebrations on Earth. This first expression saw collaborations with Japanese-French illustrator Erica Dorn in a Scottish New Year theme, while Brazilian artist Naíma Almedia centred hers around Scotland’s New Year’s Eve celebration.
This year, The Macallan is collaborating with Chinese mixed-media artist Nini Sum for the second edition of this series. The single malt Scotch whisky comes in a multi-layered pack depicting various stages of coming together and reconnecting with our loved ones during the Lunar New Year. Sum recalls the steam rising from the hot food during her reunion dinner as one of the most nostalgic “home feelings”. “I wanted to recreate that ambiance––those cherished memories of gathering beneath a bright moon that unites us all,” Sum said.
Sum has designed each layer of the pack to offer a purposeful unboxing experience. The first layer portrays an expansive landscape, featuring a night sky adorned with stars and fireworks on the left, and transitioning into a daylight scene with mountains wreathed in clouds on the right. The second layer initiates contrast and wonder, displaying a colour palette of blue in a contemporary urban scenery. Exuberant steaks of bright hues illustrate the mass movement of locals leaving the city as they travel to visit friends and family. The third layer, characterised by yellow and orange tones, demonstrates the warmth of the lantern light and the familiarity of home.
Bottled at 43 per cent ABV, this whisky is the result of an expertly balanced combination of the Macallan’s sherry seasoned European and American oak casks, along with American ex-bourbon barrels. Its flavour profile conjures up Sum’s New Year memories, ranging from the spirited burst of fireworks to the inducing aroma of steamed rice pudding. The scent carries the reminiscent notes of toasted oak wafting from the carts of rice popcorn vendors lining the brightly lit streets of Shanghai, along with a nutty undertone echoing the sunflower seeds shared by Sum’s family during Lunar New Year celebrations.
In celebration of the joyous Lunar New Year celebration, The Macallan is hosting a consumer experience event titled ‘A Night On Earth – The Journey’ at the entrance lobby of The Starhill in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Guests will have the chance to engage in a curated tasting experience with the newly launched A Night On Earth – The Journey. The event will be open to the public from 25 January to 4 February, operating between 10am and 9pm. Interested guests can reserve their complimentary 30-minute experiential session online, starting this 15 January.
