dim sum and dim sum-more
Not too long ago, dim sum accompanied tea. Not the other way around. Steamed dumplings and fluffy cha-siew buns had a space at the table so you could nibble as you savoured tea and conversation. Now they’ve taken over the main stage. But when they’re as delicately wrought as the tasty morsels at YU by Ruyi, not even the most severe tea connoisseurs kick up a fuss.
Diners sit on comfy chairs surrounded by walls of luxurious faux marble and gold piping, turning up your expectations from lavish to decadent. The best tables are in the corners along the glass facade, where sunlight filters in unobtrusively, and you have a snug nook to ease into. Ever thoughtful proprietor Lyn Siew’s also prepared a private dining room should the need arise.
For eager eyes, fill your view with the Steamin’ XXL Dim Sum Basket. Hedgehog shaped salted egg-yolk buns, custard filled pumpkin pasties, and Har Gau, or shrimp dumplings deftly sculpted as goldfish. This gargantuan dish of dainty dim sum epitomised the spirit of the cuisine, that it must touch your heart as well as sate your appetite. The brilliant catch? You can’t order this off the menu. Instead, track YU’s social posts and the among the first to enter their monthly contests. Only five winners are picked and awarded the XXL Basket.
Pained with longing? Fill the gap with a lush Pekingnese Princess, crispy duck trimmed in caviar, foie gras and gold leaf. Or gaze upon the Flower Pillow, a delectable amalgam of nuts, oats, textured caviar and fresh blackberries on a velvety matcha tofu bed. Better yet, nail your hunger pangs with the Crackling Wagyu Hor Fun, full of rich umami, and multi layered mouthfeel. And because the restaurateur has always done things her way, you can even pair your dim sum with energising cocktails of vodka, cold-pressed juices, and even bird’s nest and ebiko.
