Panerai Goes for Cutting-edge Design at the SIHH 2019

Diving into luxury

Here’s a look at the watchmaking maisons who showcased at the renown watch trade show Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) this year from the 14th to the 17th January 2019. We’ve picked the showstoppers at the event and the next on our list is  — the Panerai Submersible Chrono Guillaume Nery Edition.

You can find the full series here.

As much as the Luminor and Radiomir represent Panerai’s respect for its heritage, the Submersible represents its cutting-edge modern design. The collection bears all the brand’s hallmarks: tough as nails, generously sized (most models have a 47mm option), convex-shaped subdial hands, cushion-shaped case and prominent, lever-operated crown guard, all with a thoroughly 21st-century look.

The Submersible Chrono Guillaume Nery Edition (€38,900 or RM180,346) is no exception to these traits, and is one of the range-toppers of this year’s new Submersibles. Named for the champion free-diver and record-breaker, it is naturally a professional diver’s watch with water-resistance up to 300 metres, bright lume and great legibility, and unidirectional ceramic bezel. Its 47mm titanium case is black DLC-coated for great resistance to scratches. The flyback chronograph is operated by pushers on the left side and has a seconds reset function to synchronise with a reference time. The blue dial fades to black at the edges, reminiscent of the ocean itself, with turquoise accents on the dial and hands.

The most extraordinary thing about this watch, however, is that each owner of the 15 pieces available will be invited to Nery’s home territory of French Polynesia and have the opportunity to dive with the legend himself, as well as to put the watch through its paces.

SIHH 2019 Recap

The 29th edition of Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) was another record-breaking one, counting 23,000 visitors over its four days. Geneva’s Palexpo convention centre was packed not only with people, but the latest about to be unleashed on the horological world from the 35 participating brands.

There were quite a few new beginnings and surprises. Ulysse Nardin reworked the iconic Freak, and Bovet’s debut introduced the fair to its historical pocket watch heritage. Vacheron Constantin and Hermes surprised with some truly innovative watchmaking, while Panerai showcased new limited editions that come with adventurous experiences attached. On their last appearances at SIHH, both Audemars Piguet and Richard Mille unveiled new collections—the former surprising with distinct and deliberate design, while the latter with a completely unexpected candy-themed range.
