Fan favourite
The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group is known for their snappy “She’s a fan, He’s a fan” global campaign, where celebrities such as Morgan Freeman, Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh and Rami Malek talk about their passions and love for the hotel. Dato’ Joey Yap, the entrepreneur, author and authority figure in Chinese metaphysics, joins their ranks as Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur’s first hotel fan.
“Dato’ Joey is an ardent supporter of personalised hospitality, of memorable dining experiences, of great adventures, and of art, which makes him a unique individual who embodies all that we appreciate in a hotel fan,” said Frank Stocek, the hotel’s general manager.

“I’m very honoured to be part of this group, it’s a bit like being in the Avengers. Although I feel like Ant-Man in there,” jokes Yap during the reveal of his new role with Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur. “The serendipity in this is that I actually held my first official big event here in the hotel, when I could finally afford to rent the ballroom. From holding my first event almost 20 years ago to becoming a part of the hotel, it’s a journey with a very beautiful meaning.”
It should be noted that to be a Mandarin Oriental fan, there are a few criterions that the hotel considers. Firstly, the appointed fan has to be a genuine fan of the Mandarin Oriental brand. Secondly, they have to be experts in their field. And finally, they have to be arbiters of luxury in all aspects of their life.
“The whole idea of Feng Shui is to create a good feeling. It’s about the harmony that you feel, the pleasantness of individuals and how we can feel comfortable and at peace. I think Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur has achieved this,” says Dato’ Yap. “It’s good to celebrate the cultural elegance that makes the hotel unique and I hope it will be the starting point for more Malaysians who are part of the arts to also have this opportunity.”
