6 Ways to Use PDRN, the Korean ‘Salmon Sperm’ Taking Over Luxury Skincare

You can go to Korea to get the recently trendy ingredient injected straight into your face, or you can use one of these products from the comfort of your own home.

In skincare, innovation often comes from unexpected sources, and few ingredients illustrate that better than PDRN, a biotech powerhouse often referred to as salmon sperm in beauty circles. “PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide and is derived from salmon DNA fragments to help skin heal and repair,” explains Ginger King, cosmetic chemist and founder of Grace Kingdom Beauty Consulting.

PDRN works by activating adenosine, the molecule that signals to the skin it’s time to heal. “By activating the adenosine A2A receptor, PDRN stimulates repair pathways, reduces inflammation, and supports cell regeneration,” says Boston-based dermatologist Uchenna Okereke, M.D.

Once a staple in dermatology offices for scar and wound healing, PDRN is now a hallmark of Korean skincare, helping drive the market’s meteoric rise. According to Future Market Insights, the global K-Beauty market is projected to nearly double from US$11.2 billion in 2025 to US$20.4 billion by 2035. PDRN’s unique ability to address skin damage at the cellular level has made it a hero ingredient, and regenerative skincare trends are gaining traction well beyond Asia.

But in an industry buzzing with terms like exosomes, growth factors, and peptides, it’s worth understanding what makes PDRN unique and why it’s capturing so much attention among dermatologists and consumers alike.

How Does PDRN Differ From Exosomes, Growth Factors, or Peptides?

Simply put, PDRN stands out for its mechanism of action. “Each ingredient belongs to the regenerative family, but they work in different ways,” says Dr. Okereke. “PDRN is the blueprint; it activates adenosine, the molecule that tells skin it’s time to heal. Exosomes are the couriers, carrying messages between cells to improve skin repair and skin rejuvenation. Growth factors act as direct instructions for growth and collagen, while peptides are the subtle reminders that help support repair. Together, they can complement each other, but PDRN is uniquely DNA-based and repair-focused, with both salmon-derived and newer plant-based, cruelty-free options.” This makes PDRN a key player in regenerative skincare, setting the stage for other actives to perform. Unlike peptides, which act as reminders, or growth factors, which give instructions.

Topicals vs. In-Office: Where Does PDRN Work Best?

In-office PDRN treatments, often called “Rejuran Healer” injections in Korea, are considered the gold standard. They can visibly improve skin texture, its elasticity, and the appearance of scars. Still, topicals have carved a space in the luxury market, giving consumers a chance to incorporate PDRN into daily routines, even if the results you’ll see at home are more gradual than what you’d get in a clinic or medspa. For many, they represent a gateway into clinical-grade skincare without the downtime of in-office treatments.

“The most powerful results come from injectables, which deliver PDRN directly into the dermis, as seen in studies on its use in wound healing,” says Dr. Okereke. “Creams and serums can hydrate and support the skin barrier, but currently there is limited data on their effectiveness in topical formulation.”

Will The PDRN Trend Last?

PDRN’s origins in medical treatments and growing popularity in luxury skincare suggest it’s not just another fleeting beauty trend. Its rise parallels consumer interest in longevity and biohacking.

“While skin can help to repair and heal itself, with ageing, it slows down the process, so these regenerative ingredients can help prolong the process and make skin look better,” says King. “It is becoming increasingly important, especially for people who are biohacking to stay alive longer, so their appearance must keep up as well.”
