Curves Ahead

LG’s Curved 4K OLED TV is an arc of triumph

Every few years, the television industry corrals around the ‘next big thing’ that will propel the business forward. Buzzwords like flat screens, High Definition, 3-D screens, digital receivers, LED displays and smart TVs are passé now, but revolutionary then.

The cauldron boiling the next generation of TVs has been simmering for a while now, with the three main ingredients being an even-higher resolution than 1080P – 4K or Ultra High-Definition (UHD), OLED (organic LED) technology and curved screens to simulate depth. This is the frontier, a brave new television world to discover, with everyone looking for a harbinger.

Look no more. The LG Curved 4K OLED TV (65EC970T) is here. A cutting-edge summation of the three trending technologies, the model is an exemplary vision showcasing the best that the new tech has to offer.

First up, the curve. An evolution of the LG Art Slim design body, the 65EC970T takes the slim straight body and gives it a little bend. Human eyeballs aren’t flat but curved, so replicating that in a television simulates reality better than a flat screen, providing a greater level of immersion and a curious sense of almost three-dimensional depth.

Next, the resolution. The moniker 4K is actually a slight misnomer; it has nothing to do with the implied number four thousand, but that the UHD resolution is exactly four times that of Full HD. That massive increase in pixel density (at least until 8K screens start becoming mainstream) creates  images of tremendous clarity that can appear at first unnervingly unreal, but once your eyes adjust to the new normal, going back to anything less is painful.

Then, OLED. Put simply, OLED is a much improved version of LED, with two main innovations: it is much smaller, so each diode corresponds to a single pixel on the screen (unlike LEDs, which are too big that they have to cover four) and the additional of a white sub-pixel to the existing red, green and blue hues. The latter allows for a vast expansion in colour range, and more importantly, allows an OLED TV to render blacks deeper and richer than ever before.

Individually, each of the three is a small step forward. Put together, they are a great leap. The LG 65EC970T and its 4K OLED screen produces an image so outstanding that it takes immersion several levels ahead, aided by the slight curve of the screen that massively enhances the viewing experience. This is the new gold standard, the yardstick by which all other similar televisions will be compared. The future never looked so good.

The LG Curved 4K OLED TV (65EC970T) is now available in Malaysia, retailing at RM 29,999.00
