the science of hope
The beginning of November heralded the arrival of the L’Oreal-UNESCO For Women in Science award – back for its 13th year running in Malaysia – with the prize-giving ceremony taking place at W Hotel Kuala Lumpur. Dr Chai Lay Ching, Dr Lam Sze Mun, and Dr Norhayati Abdullah each received a grant of RM30,000 to support their research efforts into food-testing methods to prevent food- borne diseases, sustainable energy production, and wastewater treatment, respectively.
To date, the L’Oreal-UNESCO For Women in Science fellowship has awarded and provided over RM1 million research grants to over 40 women scientists. It is open to all Malaysian female researchers or scientists under the age of 40, who are PhD holders or actively pursuing research studies in any scientific field. Present at the ceremony to distribute the awards was guest of honour YB Yeo Bee Yin, Malaysia’s Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment, and Climate Change.
