There is a certain geometric panache to most skeleton watches, with the exposed bridges and plates of a movement embracing a certain mechanical logic. This is not the case, however, with Franck Muller’s new Vanguard Slim Skeleton. The new automatic calibre MVT FM 708-SQ is instead based on circles and curves, giving it a softer elegance and sense of artistry. It is, of course, finished to the usual expertise of Franck Muller—components are cut, open-worked, and hand-polished to gleaming perfection. After all, skeleton movements are all about appreciating the craftsmanship it takes to make them.
The Vanguard Slim Skeleton also debuts a new format. The collection’s signature tonneau shape is presented in a smaller 45mm by 37mm guise, helping it suit a wider variety of wrists and lending a new dimension to the Vanguard’s traditionally oversized layout. It is also just 9.1mm thick. Combined with its wrist-hugging curve, it makes for an exceptionally svelte wrist presence. The other Vanguard signature is its Arabic numerals—these remain intact, working harmoniously with the skeleton movement. They are also set with 144 brilliant-cut diamonds.
The Vanguard Slim Skeleton is available in either rose or white gold. Both case options are also set with diamonds—422 of them, placed by hand, to the tune of more than three carats.
