The Grand Seiko 8-Day Power Reserve

A triple barrel roll

At Seiko’s Micro Artist Studio in Nagano, the incredible innovation and relentless industry of its watchmakers has resulted in the stunning – but extremely rare – Credor collection which boasts the Eichi, Sonnerie and Spring Drive Minute Repeater. From this roomful of geniuses, this year’s beneficiary has been the Grand Seiko line, receiving a first-ever contribution from this secretive studio in the form of the platinum-encased Grand Seiko 8 Day Power Reserve (approximately RM268,000).

From the sapphire caseback of this 43mm timepiece, one may witness a single-piece bridge construction which traces the outlines of Mount Fuji. This single-piece bridge plays an important role in accurately positioning each wheel in the gear train. In turn, this perfectly positioned gear train channels the power from three barrels governed by Seiko’s proprietary Spring Drive technology – one which guarantees almost quartz-like timekeeping precision in mechanical movements. As an aesthetical flourish, the Grand Seiko’s Zaratsu technique is employed to create sparkling mirror-polished finishes, leaving a dial and case shimmering with the unearthly beauty of diamond dust and fresh snow.
