The recent – and eagerly anticipated – launch of the new Samsung S22 collection, which was livestreamed to a global audience, was notable in that a significant amount of attention was dedicated to making its camera capabilities more powerful and intuitive than ever before. A clear development in the year since the launch of the S21 lay in the souped-up tech and investment to push the envelope on its onboard cameras. It also led to the S22 driving pre-orders to a historical level, with more pre-orders within the first week than any other Samsung smartphone in the company’s history with the S22 Ultra 5G leading the charge contributing more than 60 per cent of the pre-orders.
On the flagship S22 Ultra 5G (from RM5,099), Samsung’s ground-breaking 4nm processor is integrated for the first time into a Galaxy device. This processor is packed with tech upgrades such as the most advanced form of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning developed by Samsung to provide a rate of performance in lockstep to your speed of action. While you carry on with your multi-tasking, the AI delivers in the background by constantly improving the clarity and quality of videos and photos – by detecting and distinguishing multiple objects in the frame for better imagery and focus.

The S22 Ultra 5G pro-grade camera also boasts another first for Galaxy devices; the first 12bit HDR (High Dynamic Range) offering the largest pixel sensor to capture more light and data with up to 68 billion colours for true-to-life vibrant images and videos. What this does is approximate the human eye, enabling you to see ultra-bright or dark areas as you might with your own eyes.
Perhaps the most obvious proof of this investment in the camera tech comes with the ‘Nightography’ feature, in which the AI kicks in automatically at low light to produce brighter, crisper photos than any of the S predecessors before. A 40mp front camera will ensure optimal quality video calls and selfies while the staggering quadruple-lens 100x Space Zoom will even capture the details on the moon on a cloudless night.
In another first, the S22 Ultra 5G also offers the S Pen built in, which we saw debut as an option with the S21 last year. This is a marked improvement as a storage solution to its predecessor, which made the phone bulkier by virtue of the extra housing on the S21 case. With the S22 Ultra 5G, the S Pen also works as a remote control for you to work on presentations and add captions on PDFs without the need for another app.
Just as importantly, Samsung has looked to boost the battery capabilities of its mobile phone with all its computing power. The energy efficient 4nm Processor is powered by a 5,000mAh battery giving it a full day’s charge. Its 45W super-fast charging means you can record 50 minutes of video from a mere 10-minute juice intake, reducing downtime when on heavy-duty usage.
From now will the end of March, Samsung is running an epic promo in which the purchase of a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G comes with a gift of a 40mm Galaxy Watch4 (RM899) and Galaxy X Lamy Safari Twin Pen (RM269) as well as six months free of 100GB OneDrive cloud storage.
