Devialet Goes Portable: The Mania Lets You Bring High-Fidelity Sound On-The-Go

Launched in 2022, the Devialet Mania is the French audio brand’s first portable speaker, bringing its pursuit of pure sound into a mobile form factor. It builds on Devialet’s two-decade reputation for combining high-fidelity sound, cutting-edge engineering, and futuristic design into products that elevate the spaces they inhabit.

And, with the Mania, that experience becomes portable. Out of the box, the speaker has a reassuring heft, weighing 2.3kg and planting itself firmly wherever it is placed. Whether on a nightstand or a work desk, the Mania commands attention with its neo-futuristic design and thumping drivers. Of the two new colourways introduced to Malaysia this year, we tested the Moss Green version, which pairs a deep green finish with lime accents around the edges and drivers, lending it a distinctly outdoorsy character. If you’re the type to walk around with a speaker, Devialet also offers the Cocoon, a protective carrying case complete with a shoulder strap and rubber handle. The Mania itself is water-resistant and delivers up to 10 hours of battery life on a single charge.

When it comes to sound, the Mania delivers in spades. The speaker fills a room with remarkable volume, and, even at levels far beyond what most listeners would require, it maintains its composure. Treble remains crisp, bass stays controlled, and low frequencies reach down to 30Hz—a near-unheard-of feat for a speaker of this size, thanks to the engineering that went into the layout of the speaker. It also incorporates Devialet’s proprietary Active Stereo Calibration and Speaker Active Matching technologies, which automatically optimise playback based on the surrounding environment and ensure perfect sound reproduction to the artist’s intention.

All told, the Devialet Mania is certainly one of the finest portable speakers I have used to date. Over the course of a little under a week, I filled my immediate vicinity with rock, pop, and ambient jazz anytime I could, and the speaker delivered every time. If you’re looking to elevate your listening experience, be it in hotel rooms, at the park, or simply when you’re taking a shower, the Mania is a surefire way of doing that.
