While the everyday listener is usually content with accessible earbuds or headphones with decent battery life and a nice sound, the passionate enthusiast demands impeccable noise-cancelling capabilities on top of that. Puritanical audiophiles, meanwhile, are pretty much impossible to please. However, there’s one brand and its signature series that has been winning plaudits in recent years, despite the never-ending debate among hi-fi nerds—Sony.

The Japanese brand’s recent WH-1000XM6 headphones and WF-1000XM6 earbuds have, yet again, won a multitude of awards for their best-in-class noise-cancelling tech, superb audio quality, and overall elegant design. Now, to celebrate a decade of its 1000X series—after the debut of the MDR-1000X headphones in 2016—Sony has released an even more luxurious series of headphones: the 1000X The Collexion, available in Platinum or Black (RM2,799 each).

The first things you’ll notice when opening up its eco-friendly case and packaging are the exceptionally premium materials and build quality of the 1000X The Collexion. For instance, the faux leather took two years to develop, resulting in a refined, tactile finish, while the headband features crafted metal with a matte sandblasted texture as well as a hand-polished gloss. The earcups are also substantially sized, so that, together with the wider cushioned headband, the headphones’ approximate 320g weight is distributed evenly, enabling you to jam to your favourite tracks for literally an entire day. That’s right, you’ve got 24 hours of music playback with noise-cancelling on; 32 with it off.

The headphones are packed full of cutting-edge tech, too. The 1000X The Collexion headphones are the first to have DSEE Ultimate, which can transform even compressed digital music files into a tremendous musical performance, thanks to what Sony calls Edge-AI. They also have a unique function known as 360 Reality Audio Upmix, which means users can experience their music, movies, and video games as though they are actually in them. Rest assured that the headphones also use the same noise-cancelling magic in the aforementioned WH-1000XM6, and have 12 microphones with Multi-Noise Sensor technology, as well as an Adaptive NC Optimiser.

Put that all together with the bespoke 30mm driver unit, plus collaborative efforts with Grammy award-winning and -nominated mastering engineers from Sterling Sound, Coast Mastering, and Battery Studios, and you’ve got a richer, wider, crisper, and better personal soundstage no matter where life takes you.
