The Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet is cause for conversation

Reach for the sky

The current Mercedes-Benz Cabriolet was the first open top S-Class from the German luxury juggernaut in no less than 45 years. Now, its ultimate expression has been revealed in the form of the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet at the recently concluded Los Angeles Auto Show.

This first drop-top to be designated a Mercedes-Maybach (€300,000, RM1,420,680) is limited to 300 units worldwide, slated to hit markets in the spring of 2017. Externally, it differs from the standard Cabriolet with bold 20-inch bichromatic Maybach forged wheels, numerous chrome highlights and the standard issue of Swarovski headlights – also an option on non-Maybach cabriolets.

The bulk of the attention to enhance the Cabriolet is focused in its sumptuous cabin, the ambience of which is inspired in part by the Mercedes-Benz Style Arrow 460-Granturismo yacht. Fully leather-lined with a waterfall-inspired upholstery pattern featuring diamond-quilted side bolsters and Budapest piping, various other pairings with interior trim are also available. The latter includes designo nut brown magnolia wood accents, an exclusive for the S 650.

Under the hood is nothing less than a 6.0-litre biturbo V12 good for 630hp and an astonishing 1000Nm of torque, with Airmatic suspension working beneath to whisk occupants along on a cloud of comfort.

An exclusive colour-matched luggage set – two travel bags and two lifestyle bags – is a courtesy addition for each fortunate customer alongside a quilted car cover adorned with the Maybach Double-M insignia. To commemorate the special purchases, Daimler CEO Dr Dieter Zetsche will sign each ownership certificate personally while “1 0f 300” lettering on the cupholder is a constant reminder of the rarity of the machine.
